Help please! Do y'all know what this is; how to get around it; get rid of it? I'm using windows xp-pro and encountering it during shut down. It's not a consistent thing, but it's happened 3 or 4 times. I've googled it of course but not found much help. Anything anything? Thank you!

I googled it and came up with this post:

Nobody on that forum seems to know exactly what it is either. But, some pointed to zone alarm, autocad, and macafee. See if any of that helps.

If it seems to hault your shutdown try alt-e to end the process.

If you can find the name of the program or prosess, you can google it exactly as it said it, and then you shood get a page telling you what it is.

I've got this same thing occasionally using xp pro, I think it happens when for some reason it can't close all open programs, I normally go off see what's open, close it manually and try shutting down again.

thank you all. I'll look at that website. Alt-E, what is that? Hmmm, I don't have zone alarm, but my laptop came with some zone game thing. hmmm... I just don't like taking out my battery to correct things, but I don't know any other way.

Good morning. Alt-E simly is a shortcut to press the end now button. Usually when there is a hangup with a window or program not responding you will see a dialog that has items such as end task and return to program I think is the other choice. End task is the default. The message usually is the program is not responding. The other thing you can try doing is if you are not getting the message the program is not responding and just seeing this command handeling window press alt-f4 to close it. My final thought is I have had this happen when using some versions of Window-/eyes and if I close the screen reader and then press start-u-u to begin the shutdown process again it works. Ahh, one more thing you could try is just hitting the power button. Not holding it down but pressing it one time. IN windows XP this is permitted and that might also shutdown the machine for you. Okay! gee, I should stop, I need to go to work but one more thing(you can tell I do this for a living right, stop snickering....)Go to MS config by pressing window-r for run and typing MSConfig and press enter. Press ctrl-tab untill you heare startup. You may have to tab one time to get to the list of programs but uncheck anything you don't recognize or need by arrowing to it and pressing spacebar and then when you are finished press enter and restart the machine. This is a great diagnostic tool and the change isn't permenant. you can put it back to default.
